PARK REFUGE STRUCTURE

Colorado Bend State Park
Bend, USA

Background

State and national parks are essential land reserves that ensure the sustainable conservation of natural landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and national cultures. Seamlessly isolated from the elements, yet deeply connected to the environment, the park refuge structure aims to underscore the role of natural "walls" on human-environment interaction. Design elements are inspired by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Piet Mondrian.

Preliminary and Mid-Stage

Considering how the artists mentioned above carefully used organized harmony, it was critical to use natural "wall" as a medium to both physically separate and directly connect visitors to the landscape. Prospects for the natural "wall" were identified but not limited to the river surface, thick vegetation, and a tall canyon edge. Additional research on Colorado Bend State Park was completed and presented in the form of an infographic below.

Final

The Park Refuge Structure directly immerses visitors with the landscape through an interactive public structure which exhibits the uniqueness of the architectural wall and Colorado Bend State Park.
